Over in the Hollow

over-in-the-hollow-coverOver in the Hollow is haunted by spooky families that multiply as the story progresses towards the superstitious number thirteen. Author Rebecca Dickinson puts a supernatural spin on the classic tale Over in the Meadow by Oliver A.Wadsworth. Here in the hollow, scary is standard and more fun than frightful. Vampires biting and mummies lurching are as common as the bees and toads of the meadow. Illustrator, S. Britt, brings the eerie menagerie to life with mixed media illustration, creating sculptural creatures and textural backgrounds. Britt also turns the hollow into a hipster Halloween full of beatnik werewolves, swingin’ Frankensteins and a ‘boogie, woogie’ band of skeletons. You can almost hear the echoes of ‘Monster Mash’ piping its way through the pages. ¬†Dickinson’s use of lighthearted rhyme combined with Britt’s playful images brings light to darkness, making Over in the Hollow, of course, a ‘graveyard smash’.
